Varsity Basketball vs. Carlisle School

The Tigers suffered through an ice-cold shooting night, going 13-52, in a loss to the Carlisle Chiefs. The Chiefs jumped out early to take a 16-3 first quarter lead. Hargrave responded by matching the Chiefs bucket for bucket in the second quarter, but they could not cut into the early lead. The Chiefs were able to convert on 8 3-point attempts, while building a large second half lead.

Varsity Basketball vs. Covenant School

The Tigers dropped a close game to the Covenant School, 66-58. Hargrave came out in a flurry, attacking Covenant and jumping to an 18-12 first quarter lead. Covenant used three 3 pointers to reclaim the lead in the second quarter, going into the locker room up 32-26. The Tigers were able to cut the lead to 6 with four minutes left in the fourth. Then Covenant converted on back-to-back three point plays to stretch their lead to 12. Hargrave was unable to overcome this bulge in the final minutes of the game.
Varsity Basketball vs. North Cross School

The Tigers fell to the North Cross Raiders, 64-34. A cold shooting night prevented Hargrave from staying in the game, as North Cross jumped out to an early 19-5 lead behind a flurry of three point makes. The Tigers were never able to recover.

The Tigers suffered a conference loss on Friday night, falling to Liberty Christian Academy. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 13-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. Stifling the Tiger’s offense and controlling the tempo of the game. LCA capitalized on poor second quarter shooting to extend their lead to 30-11 at halftime.

Hargrave hosted the Barons of Blue Ridge on Tuesday night. In a conference match-up, the Tigers struggled to contain the Barons, falling 34-99. The Barons jumped out to an early lead, using transition scores to end the first quarter up 26-7. Hargrave was never able to recover.

The Tigers finished a two game road stretch with a loss, 61-22, at the Miller School. The first quarter was marked by defense, as Hargrave was able to hold Miller to 11 points. In the second quarter, Miller outscored the Tigers 20 to 8. This gave Miller a 31-13 halftime lead. Hargrave continued to work hard through out the second half, despite poor shooting.

The Tigers returned from Christmas break to take on the Barons of Blue Ridge School. In a one-sided contest, the Barons defeated Hargrave 104-39. From the opening tip, Blue Ridge controlled the pace, jumping out to a 22-8 lead. Foul trouble plagued the Tigers, Danny Smith spent much of the game on the bench and the Barons took advantage. Turnovers in the second quarter allowed Blue Ridge to push the lead to 51-17 at half.

Hargrave returned to action on back-to-back nights to take on cross town foe Chatham High School. The Tigers fell behind 14-2 to open the game, but didn’t panic. After closing the gap to 18-10 at the end of the first quarter, Hargrave dominated the second quarter with defense, coming all the way back to tie the game 23-23 at halftime.

The Tigers struggled coming off of a 10 day lay off for Thanksgiving break. Facing former conference foe North Cross, Hargrave got off to a slow start, falling behind 14-7 after the first quarter. The Tigers were never able to get on track, losing ground in each quarter, before falling 65-28.

The Tigers opened the regular season with a convincing win over the Lions of Faith Christian Academy. From the outset, Hargrave was ready to play its only game before the Thanksgiving break. The Tigers jumped out to a 31-3 lead by playing aggressive defense and causing 8 first quarter turnovers. The lead was stretched to 44-7 by halftime and the Tigers did not look back, cruising to a 75-26 victory.

Hargrave Military Academy took to the hardwood for the second straight night for it’s last tune-up before the regular season. Focused on fixing some of the rough patches from the previous scrimmage, the Tigers were able to come out and execute offensively while playing tough defense for much of the game. Through three quarters, the Tigers held the Trojans to 33 points.

The Tigers began the 2008-2009 season with a scrimmage against E.C. Glass High School. As with all first scrimmages, there were many positive traits to reinforce and many mistakes to be corrected. The Tigers played with hustle and desire while struggling to execute offensively. Hargrave was lead by Zach Edmunds with 16 points, freshman Saquan Darby with 8 points, and Danny Smith with 6 points.

Hargrave Military Academy’s Hargrave Aquatics swimming team had a very successful meet at the 2004 SWAT (Southwest Aquatic Team) Thanksgiving Invitational, November 12-14, 2004. The team took 3rd overall with 1,564 points out of fifteen teams attending. In addition to many Virginia teams, teams from North Carolina, Tennessee and Maryland also participated.

The Tigers opened the 1st round of the VIS State Basketball tournament with a road contest against the #6 seeded Oaks of Norfolk Collegiate. Hargrave, #11 seeded, jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and never looked back. Accurate long-range shooting pushed that lead to 17-11 at the end of the first quarter. Penetration and inside play dominated the second as the Tigers continued to build on their lead. After hitting two free throws, the Tigers went into the locker room with a 34-25 lead.
